Lauren Conrad interview

LC's empowering women

Conrad is the spokesperson for Mark, the boutique beauty and fashion brand from Avon, and relished the opportunity to speaking out against dating abuse while promoting her m.powerment campaign.

SheKnows: How has life changed for you since leaving reality TV?

Lauren Conrad: It’s been good. The show provided me with a platform and now I’m able to do other things that I really enjoy like this. I teamed up with Kohl’s department store and did a line with them and my book is coming out today…it’s been good. I’ve been keeping busy and doing lots of fun stuff.

SheKnows: What message about style and beauty do you hope to share with young women today?

Lauren Conrad: I think the message is to play up the positives. Whether you’re dressing to accentuate your features or when you’re doing your make-up, play up your positives. Less is more and I think make-up is supposed to make you a lovelier version of yourself.

SheKnows: How have your personal beauty and hairstyles evolved over the years?

Lauren Conrad: I think it’s a little bit less is more. I used to put a lot of bleach in my hair and a lot of weird colors on my face. It’s one of the perks of working with mark. Is that I get a new make-up lesson every week so that’s always fun! You get to keep up the trends and beauty. It’s a progression. I think everyone goes through that. I’d like to say it’s improved a lot (smiles).

SheKnows: How do you achieve such a perfect cat eye every time?

Lauren Conrad: I work with Amy Nadine [make-up artist]. Every time we do our makeup, I normally end up doing it sitting in my bathroom sink. I think the only thing you do is just practice. Everyone has a unique eye shape and you’re going to mess up. Yeah, you just practice that one and you mess up a lot.

SheKnows: What are your favorite beauty products?

Lauren Conrad: I tend to focus on eyes. I normally wear the On the Edge liquid liner and Scanda-Lash mascara and then I always have one of the lip glosses because you can wear it bare or over red lips or any color that I do.

SheKnows: Switching gears, we hear so many stories about young girls bashing other girls who have been abused saying they probably did something to deserve it. What advice would you give to teen girls in abusive relationships to convince them otherwise?

Lauren Conrad: This is a little bit upsetting to me because I’ve always been Team Girl. But everyone’s heard that “she deserves this,” oh she’s this or she’s that -- I don’t think abuse in any form is ever deserved. The main point to me is that it’s not OK. It’s not normal. Every woman has that voice in their head that says, “that’s not ok” and everyone has that right to speak up.

SheKnows: Physical abuse is obvious but emotional abuse is harder to read. What would you say to women?

Lauren Conrad: I think that emotional abuse is harder to define and happens gradually so I think the most important thing is that it’s not right. If you’re not being treated right, that’s not ok.

Valentine's Day gifts for him

Leather wallet
If you are shopping for your man, one of the most appreciated gifts is a new wallet. You can get a genuine leather wallet from Fossil for only $25. It makes a perfect Valentine's Day gift.

You can't go wrong with giving cologne on Valentine's Day. You can buy it at a local department store or shop online for deals such as this Perry Ellis three piece gift set that features cologne, a deodorant and a body shampoo.

If the man in your life is always on the run, a new watch is a very practical Valentine's Day gift. If he's the sporting type, consider getting him one of the hip, new Oakley watches. Or you can go with a classic Seiko watch.

Cigars have become more and more popular again in recent years. Even if you don't know what type of cigar he prefers, you can order him a 5 cigar sampler grab bag for Valentine's Day.

HD television
HD technology has advanced to the point where everyone should have an HD television. If you already have one in the living room, consider purchasing your man a Flat-Panel LCD HDTV for the bedroom.

MP3 player
Music always makes a wonderful gift. Give your guy an MP3 player such as the 8GB Apple iPod touch. He will be able to listen to his favorite tunes no matter where he goes.

Personalized golf balls
The one thing golfers can never have enough of is golf balls. For Valentine's Day, surprise your boyfriend or husband with a set of personalized golf balls that will have him thinking about you even when he's out on the golf course.

If he has a 9-to-5 job, one of his daily essentials is likely his briefcase. For Valentine's Day, consider springing for a high-end luxury briefcase for the office.

Sports Tickets
Chances are that the man who you are shopping for likes sports. One oftentimes overlooked Valentine's Day gift is sports tickets. Buy him a pair of tickets for a local game and go enjoy it with him or encourage him to go with one of his guy friends.

Reduce Stress with Natural Homemade Beauty Recipes

Relaxing Foot Soak This is a great way to detox and relax, especially since many of us spend all day on our feet.

1 cup Epsom salt
1 peppermint tea bag
1 chamomile tea bag
1 basin of water

Fill a basin with warm water and add the Epsom salts and tea bags. Soak feet for 30 minutes.

Cleopatra Milk Bath Cleopatra, the queen of the Nile, is probably one of the most famous "home beauty" fans. One of her greatest beauty secrets was long relaxing milk baths. Here is a modern day twist on her ancient recipe using common household ingredients.

1 tablespoon dried rosemary
1 tablespoon dried mint
Peel of 1 orange
2 cups boiling water
1 9 ounce box of dried milk

Pour the boiling water over the rosemary, mint and orange peel and allow it to steep until cool -- strain off the liquid and mix in the dried milk. To use, pour the herbal milk solution into your bath under the running water. Soak in the tub. Rinse the milk off of your skin and follow up with a light natural oil such as almond or light sesame oil.
Papaya Face MaskThis mask is easy to make and can help reduce wrinkles -- making you look less stressed. Papaya has enzymes in it similar to alpha hydroxy acid.

3 tablespoons of blended papaya
1/3 cup oatmeal
1 tablespoon honey

Blend all the ingredients together. Smooth mask on to face and leave on for five to 10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
Honey Hair Pack Honey does great things for your hair. It is a natural humectant, which means it attracts and holds in moisture. It's good for treating hair that has been damaged by the sun, wind or styling. And it will add body and bounce to your strands. It may seem a bit sticky but honey rinses out of your hair very easily.

1/2 cup pure honey

Massage the honey into your hair and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. You may cover your head with a plastic shower cap or warm towel. Rinse your hair well with warm water.
Old-Fashioned Bubble Bath This indulgent old-fashioned bubble bath will take you back to your childhood. The sugar and egg whites condition skin and add to the bubbly effect.

1/2 cup milky liquid soap or shower gel
1 tablespoon sugar or honey
1 egg white

Mix together all ingredients. To use, pour the entire mixture under the running water as you draw your bath.
Lavender SpritzerUse this refreshing spritzer anytime you need a soothing boost.

Distilled Water
Lavender Aqua (essential oil)

Mix a drop or two of the lavender aqua (or essential oil) in a bottle of distilled water. Store in refrigerator and spray on face and body for a refreshing and soothing lift.
Super Muscle Soothing SoakThis is the perfect bath after a day of strenuous activity. You'll feel your muscles relax as you bathe.

1 cup kosher salt or sea salt
1 cup baking soda
1 cup Epsom salts

Mix together all ingredients and store in an airtight jar. To use, pour 1/2 cup of bath soak under warm running water.
Rosemary Body TreatmentTo invigorate your mind and restore your well-being (while sloughing off dry skin), try this great bath recipe:

1 cup fresh Rosemary
1 bowl of water
1 cup Epsom salts
2 teaspoons of olive, grapeseed or jojoba oil
12 drops of lavender essential oil

Directions: Steep rosemary in a bowl of boiling water for 30 minutes. While your bath water is running, use a dry brush or loofah over your entire body to get rid of dead skin. Strain the rosemary-infused water into a jug or bowl and add the Epsom salts and oil. Stir thoroughly and pour into bath water. To complete this wonderful brew, drop in lavender oil.
"Me-Time" Facial MassageA simple facial massage performed on yourself can help combat a dull complexion and relieve stress and strain, leaving both you and your skin refreshed and rejuvenated.

Facial massage oil (like apricot kernel oil)
Lavender essential oil

Directions: Mix together the facial oil and lavender and warm a few drops between your hands, cupping them over your nose and take 3 deep breaths. To massage:
1. Sweep your right hand downwards from the top of your neck outward across your decollete to your shoulder.
2. Sweep hands from the middle of your forehead up towards the hairline and outwards towards the temples. Finish with a sweep under the eyes (along the bone).
3. With alternate hands stroke upwards along the middle of the eyebrows upwards along the forehead.
4. Gently pinch the chin and jaw line with your thumbs under the chin and fingers on top of the jaw line.
Fresh Strawberry Mask Strawberries are rich in salicylic acid, the same key ingredient in many commercial acne products. Reduce stress-induced blemishes with this edible mask.

1/2 cup fresh strawberries
1 tablespoon sour cream
2 teaspoons honey

Directions: Mix together all ingredients until smooth using a fork or blender. To Use: Spread over your face and neck and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water and pat skin dry.
Petal-Perfect BathAsian spas believe soaking in bath water with flowers symbolizes purifying the soul. This bath may not purify your soul but it will leave you relaxed and refreshed. Plus, it's a great use for wilting flowers.

Flowers (Roses are recommended but any flowers you have will work)
Bubble Bath (optional)

Peal the petals from your flowers and drop them into a hot bath (add bubble bath too if you like). The flowers will make your bathroom smell wonderful and make your bath water look dreamy.
Avocado Oil Conditioner This rich hair conditioner is similar to the "hot oil" treatments offered in salons. It contains avocado oil, which keeps hair soft, radiant and flexible.

1 tablespoon avocado oil
1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon honey
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Mix all ingredients together and stir until smooth and creamy. Massage into your hair and scalp. Cover your head with a shower cap or warm towel and relax for 15 minutes. Shampoo and rinse hair well.

Acne Fighting Essential Oils

Essential oils can be great allies in the fight against acne. Used full strength or diluted with a carrier oil, essential oils can be applied topically to relieve mild to moderate acne. When choosing an essential oil you must consider your skin type, the kind of acne you are dealing with, and whether or not the oil of your choice has to be diluted before use. Some essential oils should not be used full strength and it is important to follow the indications on the bottle. As a general rule, the more sensitive your skin, the more diluted your oils should be.

As with any acne treatment, if a rash or irritation develops you should discontinue use immediately; if it persists you should see a doctor.

1) Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is an excellent antibacterial treatment making it an excellent acne fighter as well as a general purpose wound cleaner. It helps soothe irritations, rashes and burns, control acne and dandruff, and treat warts and other fungal infections. The healing properties of this oil make it one of the best essential oils to have in your medicine cabinet. As an acne treatment, tea tree oil is fast acting and acts to clear up the skin while calming the effected area.

2) Bergamot Oil
Bergamot oil has a revitalizing fragrance and it blends well with other oils making it an excellent addition to any acne treatment blend. Bergamot has antibacterial and drying properties making it an ideal spot treatment for existing blemishes. The citrus aroma has a calming effect on the mind and soul. Should not be used full strength except on the advice of a licensed homeopathic professional.
3) Clove Oil
Clove oil is a very potent essential oil that has burning and purifying properties. In its pure form it is very irritating and should be blended with a skin friendly carrier oil (like grapeseed oil) before being applied to the skin. Some devotees use it full strength as a spot treatment for stubborn acne, but this is not generally advised. When diluted, clove oil can be applied to the skin to treat emerging or existing breakouts. It is very strong and acts very quickly. Should not be used full strength except on the advice of a licensed homeopathic professional.

4) Lavender Oil
Lavender oil has well known antibacterial and soothing properties. It is excellent as a preventative acne treatment that effectively stops future breakouts while clearing the redness often associated with acne prone skin. Lavender oil is very strong and should be diluted prior to application on the skin. Should not be used full strength except on the advice of a licensed homeopathic professional.

5) Rosewood Oil
This highly aromatic essential oil is excellent for people with excessively oily skin. When applied topically it helps reduce sebum production thus limited breakouts associated with oily skin. Not recommended for those with very dry or sensitive skin. The strong drying properties of this oil make it an excellent spot treatment that can be applied throughout the day to effected areas.

Victoria Beckham
Victoria Beckham is opening up in the pages of the March issue of Glamour magazine.

Some of the highlights of her interview with the women's mag,

'I travel a fair amount, and when I’m here in L.A., everything revolves around the kids. So if I’m not working, I go to the school and help serve lunches to the children.

'When I dress in a certain way and do my hair and makeup in a certain way, it’s not to get attention. I’m not a supermodel. I make the best of what I’ve got. I work out to look the best that I can, but I’m no Gisele.'

I look at David and I think, he’s so handsome and I’m lucky to have him as a husband,” she gushes. “And he’s an amazing father.”
